LESSON Grade: 1st Grade
Subject Area: Science
Content Standard: Balance and Motion
  • Students will:
    • Observe systems that are unstable and modify them to reacy equilibrium.
    • Explore concepts of balance, counterweight, and stability.

Lesson Title: The Balance Lesson
Time needed: one 45 minute class period plus pre- and post-teaching in the classroom

Short description of the lesson: Two pre-questions were discussed in the classroom:
  1. What would happen if you had an object in each hand, and one object was heaver than the other? How would that feel? (Model fulcrum using your hands.)
  2. If you are balancing on a high wire, is it better to have your hands out or down by your sides?

After the introduction in the classroom, students in groups rotated through three stations in the library. First, they played a balance app on the iPod touch. Then, they had to walk on a tight rope on a Wii Fit Plus. Finally, they read (or listened to) Mirette on the High Wire and completed a balance activity. They had a cut out of Mirettr or Monsieur Bellini that they tried to balance on their fingertip. If you do not have a Wii Fit, you could borrow balance boards from PE or create some other way for students to balance.

Lesson Title: Book Podcasting
Time needed: one 30 minute lesson to teach how to podcast (Then, a class could podcast as an assignment, or a student could podcast individually during centers.)

Short description of the lesson: Students write a book review of a book they read without giving away the ending. Then, they log on to Vocaroo to record their reviews. Then, these can be posted on the library or class website. (To use Vocaroo, you have to have an e-mail [[Grades K-2 Standards 2 & 3#|account]], so I created a generic accout through yahoo to create the Vocaroo account. Then, students sign into Vocaroo with that account, and they also send their podcast to that same [[Grades K-2 Standards 2 & 3#|e-mail address]]. Those are the podcasts I post online.)

Online application used & other possibilities (include notes like: use the “edu version”, you can create your students’ accounts)
